Modified-release formulations often provide advantages in patient compliance and patent exclusivity compared to immediate-release versions. However, what’s less apparent is that these dosage forms bring their own set of challenges.
A deep understanding of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), the target product profile (TPP), and the necessary release-controlling polymers is crucial. Without this knowledge, development delays and higher costs can occur, impacting return on investment.
Key strategic decisions must be made regarding the desired in vivo behavior and the final dosage form, which will significantly influence formulation strategy and polymer selection. Should it be a tablet or a capsule? Should the release be sustained or pulsatile? Should the drug follow zero-order or first-order release kinetics? Would matrix tablets or multiparticulate systems be better suited?
Each of these decisions plays a vital role in determining which polymers and excipients to use. In this webinar, experts will discuss the most used polymers in matrix-modified release tablets, covering their various chemistries and how these differences impact performance. Additionally, a decision tree will be presented to guide matrix tablet formulation.
Participants in this webinar will gain insights into:
- The characteristics of different polymer grades and their effects on dissolution performance in the final product
- How APIs influence the selection of polymers for matrix tablet formulations
- Synergies between different chemistries and use level benefit (and beyond).
About the speaker:
Dr Simon Roberts
Controlled Release Manager - EMEA | IMCD
After completing a BSc in Chemistry, Simon studied Biopolymer Mixtures for his PhD. This was followed by several academic research positions investigating super absorbent materials, carbon nanotube rheology, dental and medical materials, pulmonary drug delivery and protein-polysaccharide drug conjugates.
After leaving academia, he spent five years in a global technical support role in the oral drug products group of a multinational pharmaceutical company, responsible for technology transfers, excipient introductions, process scale up and trouble shooting. For the last 13 years he has worked for excipient manufacturers and distribution companies in technical sales and scientific business development roles.
